Powerful, engaging, preaching

By · Comments (0)

This past month, I had the opportunity to attend the Pastor’s conference connected with our Baptist State Convention. One of the preachers was the dynamic Calvin Miller. He proclaimed (and modeled) the art of powerful Preaching/Teaching.

He gripped us from the beginning of his lesson with purposeful anecdotes that spoke to the joys and potential pitfalls that can come with preaching.

The Baptist Messenger of Oklahoma picked up on the essence of his lecture here: Calvin Miller on Preaching.

This experience reminded me yet again to get with the best in a field, listen to them, take notes, practice, and get better. I preach Wednesday night, and wow, I need to get better!

What resources have you found that have been an inspiration to you in Preaching/Teaching?

In the past few weeks, our church has tweaked our online social media ministry. Yes, we’re talking twitter and facebook. It has been a fascinating advance, and it has been rather stunning to watch the speed of folks responding to these connections.

We are working to use these outlets in very practical ways, and here are the neatest that I have seen so far:

1. Ability to quickly connect “news” to our group.

2. The blessing of easily expanding the ministry reach of our church globally!

3. The opportunity for inter-connectivity. It is cool to think of all the layers of relationships and friendships that can spin out of being a “friend”  of our church.

4. The potential of archiving thoughts, blessings, and activities of the membership for a period of time; a living journal.

5. Obviously, this is another way to share the Truth that Jesus Christ is the Way of Salvation. John 3:16!

What cool facebook or twitter ministry sights have impressed you?  Have you developed any cool applications for either of these web tools?

Live Blogging/Tweeting

Recently a friend of mine, Cory Miller, set up a new experience for me and that was to live post/chat during a convention. It was great!

I enjoyed the interaction so much, and apart from the brief bad feeling of staring at my iPhone to tweet during sermons, it has me contemplating ways to use this type of interaction in the future at our church.

Check out the look of this medium at www.baptistmessenger.com/live.

Recently I viewed a video from this year’s Catalyst Conference in Atlanta.  The message is to “prove it.” Check this out.
